Mint Chocolate Magic Shell Copycat

Mint Chocolate Magic Shell Copycat

Were you a fan of Magic Shell on your ice cream when you were a kid?  I was a big fan of the commercials although I don’t think I ever actually had the product when I was a young child.  My mother just refused to buy it no matter how much we begged.  She wasn't much for those prefabricated type products.  She preferred making us hot fudge sauce on the stove top and telling us it was the same thing.  It wasn't.  I had seen the commercials and I wanted the chocolate sauce that would turn into a hard shell right before my eyes.  I’m sure if she knew about the copycat recipe, she’d have made it for me.

As an adult I have purchased it a few times and while I found it enjoyable, I think that I like the hot fudge sauce my mom used to make just a little bit more. Now instead of buying magic shell, I make it in small single serve batches so I can have it when I want it without all the leftovers.  And when you make it yourself, it can be flavored the way you want it.  Since I had mint chocolate chip ice cream I added some peppermint extract to this one.  Another great selling point of doing it yourself is that it doesn't contain all those additives and preservatives you find in the store bought stuff.

And once you see how easy this is to make, I think you’ll be whipping it up frequently this summer.  As I type this my mind is already wandering off to the peanut butter chocolate variety that will enrobe my frozen bananas in a few days.

  1. Thank you for posting this, I've been looking for an actual recipe that works just like the store brand. Now I can use it to decorate ice cream for my new video I'm working on.
